As an expansion team, the franchise began play in the 1988–89 season.

In the middle of the 1990s, when Pat Riley became team president and head coach, the Heat regained their relevance after a period of mediocrity.

Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway were traded by Riley, propelling the team into contention for the playoffs.

Before they left the Heat in 2001 and 2002, Hardaway and Mourning led the team to four division titles in a row.

After the team selected Dwyane Wade in 2003, it also had success.

The 27-game winning streak that the Heat had during the 2012–13 season is the NBA's third-longest. Miami has produced six Hall of Famers, and James won two NBA MVP Awards in a row while playing for the team.

Spoelstra led the team to four straight NBA Finals appearances, which culminated in consecutive championships in 2012 and 2013.
